The choice between buying an ERP and building your own system is rarely all or nothing. Most organisations do best with a standard core and custom software where they are genuinely different.
Buy what is standard
General ledger, payroll and basic procurement work the same way in most companies. Mature products handle them well, and local tax and reporting rules are usually covered.
Build what makes you different
Pricing logic, industry workflows, customer portals and integrations with government systems are where packaged software forces compromises. Custom modules around a standard core keep the advantage without rebuilding accounting from scratch.
Plan the seams

- which system owns each record,
- how data moves between them, and how often,
- who maintains each integration when either side changes.
Get that right and both parts can change without breaking the other.
